Seeking Console Counsel

One of the Craigslist items I was interested in worked out. I'm now the proud owner of a $25 Parson's-style console table.
Doesn't it resemble one Kelly Wearstler used in this interior? I still need some X benches to go under the table.
I love it and think it's the perfect style to reside behind my sofa. However, I'm not sure about the laminate finish. From far away, it looks nice and has a nice burled wood effect. Close-up, well, it looks like this . . .
It's got that textured 70's effect. Hmm. Not so sure. Some people think it looks fine as it is. I agree to some extent, but I always thought I wanted a grasscloth covered console table. Once again, that brings up issues. For one thing, my sofa has fabric that resembles grasscloth. Plus, there is already a lot of brown in this room. I need some contrast.

Then, I had a brainwave. Maybe colored grasscloth?

Not necessarily black, but maybe a saturated blue? I've run across a few online. Some are quite pricey.

Or maybe some faux crocodile?

Or, I could always paint it. Oh, decisions. Any suggestions? Are you digging the current laminate or do you think a makeover is in order?

I don't mind it the way it is but I could see how a nice update would make it all the more fun and exciting.

As is looks nice--I think laminate on Parson's tables are expected. BUT color would be grand--and if you are thinking alligator, then I would just paint over the laminate since it already has that reptilian-like texture. I love that blue you have selected!

You can put any cheap grasscloth on it and then just paint it the color you want!!! Grasscloth was really big in the 80"s and everyone had it. Then people started painting over it and I love that look. Can't wait to meet you.

I really think you should put it in your car and bring it to Atlanta and sell it to your friend Sissy. She has been looking for one and sadly her Craigslist is the saddest Craigslist in America. If you insist on keeping it I agree with Sherry, grasscloth would be awesome!!!

oh my heavens...I LOVE that table. I seriously need to to start scouring craigslist in some better towns. I live in Pawleys Island and the closest we have is Myrtle Beach and let me tell ya, nothing good ever comes out of MB!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Sherry, I hadn't thought of putting on any cheap grasscloth, then painting. You're a genius. Can't wait to pick your brain some more in Atlanta! And Sissy, this one was tough to find and guess who found it, yes, it was Bri again! That girl is my CL best friend!

I realize this has already been said now, but I agree with the suggestion for covering it with inexpensive grasscloth (regardless of color), then painting it as you choose.

And, if money and time were no object, I'd say go for the faux croc. WOW!

Yes, I love the table's lines but one of the makeovers you're considering would definitely elevate the piece! That deep blue grasscloth is delish. Whatever you decide, lets see the tutorial!

Love the faux croc! Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Nice find! I really like the croc, but painted grasscloth will be pretty too...natural grasscloth might become a dust trap, so that's a good solution.

I kind of like it the retro way it is. What a find!!!

There are only things like that Jack Daniel's LR set on my CL these days. So jealous of your fab finds. That table rocks and will look great w/some X benches.
