I was working on this post yesterday when the bombings happened in Boston. Just absolutely shocking, horrific and sad. My heart goes out to all the victims and their families, witnesses and Bostonians, in general. I decided to go ahead and share my somewhat frivolous post today in case you might need a little distraction in the face of the tragedy.
On my last post, I mentioned that I was going to hit up an estate sale early on Friday to try and snag some goodies. Well, I actually showed up early enough to be third in line and get the items I was going for. Yay! Specifically, I scored these mid-century chrome rolling stools/benches . . .Here they are at the estate sale. I liked the table too, but decided to pass. It sold within minutes. |
Later that same day, my Craigslist sofa was also finally delivered so I was thrilled it was all coming together. Here are the stools in the playroom with the new sofa . . .
I didn't think they looked too bad as they were, but the fabric was a little dated and blah and had light blue and pink running through it.
Plus, one of the stools had a small rip in the fabric, so I knew I'd have to recover them anyway. I noticed that underneath the tear, the fabric peeking through was black. Curious, I got to work pulling off the top fabric . . .
Do you see what I see? Yes, it was a zebra striped velvet peeking through. So, I got out my fabric scissors and went to town. But, of course, I also had to get out my screwdrivers and pliers to remove the portions stapled underneath. Afterwards, I had this . . .
Can you believe it? I think it looks pretty cool. I'm fairly certain this is the original fabric as the manufacturer's tag underneath is stapled on top of the fabric underneath. However, while there are no tears in the fabric, there are some pretty serious stains . . .
I've tried getting them out but haven't had much luck. Any suggestions on how to get out really old fabric stains? Plus, my daughter isn't a huge fan of the zebra. I can't decide.
What do you think? Try to clean up the old zebra fabric or go for something new? I'll be looking for fabric options regardless. I was just excited there was a little surprise in my recent find. Stay tuned for more playroom updates as things start shaping up. Next up, new carpet, lighting and hopefully curtains.
And in other big news from the weekend, my baby boy turned 8 on Sunday. Eight, people.
There were two celebrations - one with friends and one with family. Pierce got more toys than he knows what to do with, so he's thrilled.
Happy Birthday, my beautiful boy!

What a great score! I love your mid century modern stools. I'm not usually a fan of animal prints, but I anxiously await your ability to layer elements to bring your space to life. I too have a navy sofa sadly it's currently nestled between a hodge podge of this this and than... Keep inspiring me:-)
UMMMMMMM, I love your stools, I love the zebra, I love your couch, I love your rug, I love your console table, I love your sweet adorable boy, and I realllly love the cinnamon bun cake.
Seriously, it's all so good.
I love the zebra!
Have you tried oxyclean? dawn/water mixture? maybe even let a shout wipe lay on it with a wet rag on top?
I say try to keep the zebra. Adds a lil somethin extra!
Happy Birthday Pierce!! what a cutie!!! And your stool are fabulous!! Love the zebra!!
You need to try Immacu-10. It is made in Hermitage and they have a booth at the Nashville flea market. It is usually a sweet older lady doing demos in the building that is attached to the front one (if that makes sense!) Its the most amazing stuff ever...and supposedly the older the stain the better it works...so that would be perfect for this! BTW Love the stools!
While it seems frivolous to chat about pretty things, I think that's a good way to cope with the ugly violence around us.
Anyway, YOU MAJORLY SCORED! Did you notice that turtle lamp on the console table? It's so freaking cute. As far as the stools you came home with, they are amazing. Have you tried Spot Shot? I've had it take stains out of carpets and upholstery, so it might be worth trying.
Pierce has the most beautiful blue eyes, but you probably already knew that...
Pierce is a little Matt. Wow in that one picture he looks just like him. I love the stools. I would keep the original of course.
Dawn and peroxide on them stains! Magic! (usually, and I hope in your case).

Those stools? I die. I mean how lucky are you? Have you tried dilluted bleach and apply with a q-tip?
SCORE! It pays to go early! They look just fab with your new couch as well. Good work girlfriend!
I guess it was worth getting up early! Of course I love the stools, I would try and salvage the zebra, and have you tried Awesome? They sell it at the Dollar Tree and it's worked on every stain I've tried it on!
Well, you know I vote for the Zebra!! What a fun find!! I have no clue how to get the stains out ... but would try all the suggestions you got above before ditching the zebra! xo
Fabulous find. Darling son.
Try Simple Solution to get out the stains. If they are organic, they will disappear. (my go to from the pet store) If the stain is rust, you will need to get something that dissolves that type of stain.
Good luck.
